South Korea to start developing nuclear reactor for nuclear submarines in 2025
The South Korean government has authorised the construction of a test facility in 2025 to develop a nuclear propulsion system for submarines.
Here's What We Know
The idea of creating its own submarine reactor was first discussed back in 2015, when the programme to build the South Korean oceanic fleet began to reach its peak.
However, the government at the time failed to reach an agreement with the US on the development of this area, which also angered President Barack Obama at the time.
The US position began to change in 2020, when it became clear that China would continue to build up its maritime capabilities. General plans for the development of a nuclear reactor began to emerge in 2021, when the government announced its desire to develop a small nuclear reactor that could be used on civilian vessels, submarines, and surface combatants.
And today it is already known that a special test facility will be developed in 2025. The South Korean Navy already has submarines capable of launching cruise and medium-range ballistic missiles.
It is worth noting that in recent years, South Korea has demonstrated an "expansion" of the European arms market. Its industry is on the path of expanding the capabilities of its armed forces to ensure the defence of both its own state and to counter Chinese expansion.
