Ilon Musk's company, X (formerly Twitter), has found itself at the centre of a legal battle in Ireland over the use of European Union users' data to train its artificial intelligence model Grok without their consent.

Here's What We Know

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has filed a lawsuit against X, alleging that the company violated the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which requires a legal basis for processing personal data. The DPC is seeking an injunction to stop X from processing X's user data to train AI models, and plans to take the case to the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).

Last month, X began using users' data without notice or consent, providing the ability to opt out only through hidden settings on the website. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, suspended similar actions after complaints of GDPR violations. The trial will continue next week and X could face hefty fines for GDPR non-compliance.
