Google is preparing a new version of its smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 5.1, which, according to a new report, could be based on Android 15. Currently, Wear OS 5 is installed on the new Samsung Galaxy watches, but the next version could bring major changes compared to the current updates.

Here's What We Know

Android 15 will not be released on the new Pixel 9 phones that are planned for release. The new version of Android is not yet ready for release, and its launch will take place after the Pixel 9 presentation, which is scheduled for 13 August. The Pixel 9 will run on an earlier version of Android.

Typically, Wear OS versions are based on previous versions of Android. For example, Wear OS 4 is based on Android 13, and Wear OS 5 is based on Android 14. However, if Wear OS 5.1 is based on Android 15, it could indicate that Google is changing its approach to updates. This could mean that Wear OS will become less dependent on Android and will be able to receive updates faster and more independently.

Wear OS 5.0 build numbers start with AW2A, and new Wear OS 5.1 builds start with AP4A. A change in the naming scheme may indicate that a new version of Wear OS has significant changes or improvements in functionality. This could be a sign of significant updates or new features that will be introduced in Wear OS 5.1.
