Major changes to Chrome may force users to look for alternatives
Google Chrome, the world's most popular web browser, is gearing up for significant changes that could dramatically affect ad blockers.
Here's What We Know
The major change involves the transition of the Manifest V2 extension platform to Manifest V3, which will lead to tighter control over extensions and could mean the end for many popular ad blockers such as AdBlock and uBlock Origin. Google has already begun the process of ending support for Manifest V2 in Beta, Dev and Canary Chrome versions and once fully tested, these changes will be implemented in all stable versions of the browser.
Users who wish to continue using ad blockers may find it difficult as Google steers them towards a more controlled browsing experience. Users can use developer mode to install unofficial extensions, but this requires technical expertise and comes with risks. The move to Manifest V3 may also affect other browsers built on Chromium, such as Microsoft Edge and Opera, which could push users towards alternative browsers such as Firefox.
