Honeybee Robotics has received funding to create lunar "streetlights" that are taller than the Statue of Liberty

Honeybee Robotics, a private company that is part of Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, has received funding from the US government to build the first "streetlights" on the moon.

The project, called LUNARSABER, involves installing towers 100 metres high that will be taller than the Statue of Liberty. These towers will be able to store solar energy during the lunar day and illuminate the moon's surface during the two-week lunar night.

The towers will also be equipped with scientific research and communications equipment, and their bases will be able to recharge lunar rovers and other infrastructure. The project is part of DARPA's lunar architecture development programme for the next 10 years. Honeybee Robotics engineers have developed an automated system that will allow the towers to unfold from their bases, making them easier to transport and install on the moon.

The project is in the early stages of development, but its realisation could be an important step towards establishing permanent human settlements on the Moon and developing lunar infrastructure.
