Google is preparing an update to Android 14 for Chromecast with Google TV
At last week's Made by Google event, in addition to the new Pixel devices, a new Google TV Streamer set-top box was unveiled to replace the Chromecast. Despite the discontinuation of the Chromecast, Google will continue to provide software updates for existing devices, including an upgrade to Android 14.
Here's What We Know
The new Google TV Streamer set-top box will be the first device in the US to run Android 14 for TV, but not all Android TV 14 features will be available on other devices. For example, the new Thread feature, which allows TV devices to act as Thread routers, won't be available on older devices because they don't have the proper hardware.
Chromecast with Google TV will also get an update to Android 14, but without Thread support. Google promises to continue providing security updates for the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) until the end of September 2025, and for the HD model until the end of September 2027. The update to Android TV 14 will be the second major update for the 4K model and the first for the HD model. The exact release date of the update is not yet known.
