OpenAI said it disrupted an Iranian influence campaign that used ChatGPT to create fake news and social media posts targeting Americans.

Here's What We Know

The company identified and blocked accounts that created content for five websites that posed as news outlets and spread polarising messages on issues such as the US presidential campaign, LGBTQ+ rights and the war in Gaza.

The operation, dubbed Storm 2035, was linked to the Iranian government and included a dozen accounts on X and one on Instagram. OpenAI noted that the operation did not receive meaningful support as most posts did not receive likes, reposts or comments.

The operation also included content creation about Israel's presence at the Olympics, Venezuelan politics, the rights of Latin American communities and Scottish independence. OpenAI emphasised that the operation tried to play to both sides of the US government, but received no support from either side.
