Due to lack of budget: Germany could not finance another IRIS-T system for Ukraine

Germany, despite its promise, was unable to buy an additional IRIS-T SLM battery for Ukraine due to lack of funds.

Here's What We Know

Germany is limiting military assistance to Ukraine because of the spending of funds allocated by the federal government for 2024. That is, by the end of this year, Germany will be transferring what it allocated money for earlier, and there will be no unscheduled purchases, at least for now.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published part of a letter sent on 5 August by Finance Minister Christian Lindner to Defence Minister Borys Pistorius. It states that there is likely to be no increase in military aid to Ukraine, but rather that by 2027, these figures will be significantly lower.

However, the letter states that further assistance to Ukraine from Germany will be allocated from frozen Russian assets, not the state budget.

The allocated budget for military aid to Ukraine for 2024 has been completely exhausted, and the government is currently unable to place an order for additional IRIS-T systems, so Norway has funded the additional systems.
