The US Department of State on Monday approved the sale of up to 36 AH-64E Apache helicopters, logistics and related equipment to South Korea in a $3.5 billion deal.

Here's What We Know

South Korea will also purchase up to 76 GE T700 engines, two in each helicopter, as well as four spares. And each helicopter will receive its own upgraded AN/ASQ-170 target detection and designation sight.

Along with the helicopters, South Korea also wants to buy hundreds of missiles to arm them, including 456 Hellfire missiles, 6 air-to-ground missiles and 152 air-to-ground missiles. The main suppliers for the proposed sale to South Korea are Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

It is worth noting that in 2013, South Korea purchased 36 AH-64E Apaches. Overall, the deal still needs final approval from Congress.
