Meta (formerly Facebook) has ceased work on a premium virtual and augmented reality headset.

Here's What We Know

The development of the device began in November last year. The official release was expected to take place in 2027. The headset, codenamed La Jolla, was supposed to compete with Apple Vision Pro.

The company does not give the exact reasons for the cancellation of the project. It seems to be due to the expensive MicroOLED displays, which significantly increased the price of the headset. Although Meta originally wanted to keep the price below $1,000.

Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth commented on the information as follows:

""We have many prototypes in development at all times. But we don’t bring all of them to production. We move forward with some, we pass on others. Decisions like this happen all the time, and stories based on chatter about one individual decision will never give the real picture"".

In the meantime, Meta is still working on a more affordable Quest, codenamed Ventura, which is expected to be released later this year.
