Telegram reacts to Durov's arrest: Accusations of insufficient moderation are absurd

On 25 August, Pavel Durov, the 39-year-old founder and CEO of Telegram, was detained at Le Bourget Airport when he got off his private jet. He was accompanied by a bodyguard and a woman. Durov had flown in from Azerbaijan, unaware that he was about to be arrested.

French law enforcement officials detained him on the basis of a warrant issued earlier on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking, child abuse and fraud. Telegram is believed to be not doing enough to combat these crimes and is not cooperating with the police.

Telegram responded by saying that the allegations were "absurd". The company said that the platform cannot be held responsible for user abuse. In a statement, they emphasise that they comply with EU standards, including the Digital Services Act, and are constantly improving moderation.

Pavel Durov remains in custody. The Paris prosecutor's office is expected to release an official statement on Monday. Telegram hopes for a quick resolution of the situation.
