According to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC), Android phone sales will grow 9 times faster than iPhone sales in 2024.

Here's What We Know

Global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.23 billion units, up 5.8 per cent year-on-year. The first quarter of 2024, following the launch of the Galaxy S24 series, saw a 12 per cent growth in the first quarter, followed by a 9 per cent growth in the second quarter. The main contributor to the sales growth was phones with generative artificial intelligence features, which will increase shipments by 344% and take 18% of the market.

Although Apple will introduce its version of GenAI in the iPhone 16, Android phones are already making heavy use of AI in their flagships and mid-range models. The growth in Android phone sales is mainly driven by demand in China and emerging markets. The average selling price of an iPhone this year will be $982, while Android phones sell for an average of $281. Despite this, Apple remains the leader in terms of sales revenue. The iOS growth trajectory is expected to improve in 2025, thanks to Apple Intelligence.
