Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new virus, Cicada3301, that can attack both Windows and Linux systems. This malware appeared in June 2024 and has a lot in common with the BlackCat virus used in the attack on Colonial Pipeline in 2021.

Here's What We Know

Cicada3301 not only encrypts files, but also steals them if it does not receive a payment. Written in Rust, this virus is notable for its efficiency and flexibility. It blocks access to files and tries to obtain personal data through fraudulent methods.

After appearing on a dark web forum, Cicada3301 developers started offering their services to attack selected targets for a fee. As of September 2024, Cicada3301 resources are still active, and no arrests have been reported.
