Germany to buy 17 additional batteries of IRIS-T SAMs for Ukraine
Germany will buy an additional batch of IRIS-T air defence systems for the Ukrainian army.
Here's What We Know
This was announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a press conference. It is about 17 batteries. Four systems will arrive in Ukraine by the end of 2024, and deliveries of the rest will begin in 2025. By the way, Scholz confirmed that Ukraine has already received 7 systems, which shot down more than 250 missiles and drones. The AFU uses SAMs in the SLS and SLM versions.
Flashback
The IRIS-T (InfraRed Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled) SAM is a German surface-to-air missile system designed to defend against air threats at low and medium altitudes. The IRIS-T was originally designed as an air-to-air missile, but later adapted for use in anti-aircraft systems.
The system's main missile is equipped with an infrared homing head, which allows it to effectively engage targets even in the face of active interference and enemy manoeuvres. The system is designed to defend against various types of threats, including aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.
The complex integrates with various radar and command systems and can be used both in standalone mode and as part of a multi-level air defence system.
