Canada will supply Ukraine with a modern air defence system.

Here's What We Know

This was told by the Minister of Defence of Canada. It is about the surface-to-air missile system NASAMS. Deliveries of the system will begin in early 2025. By the way, Canada announced the purchase of SAMs for the AFU in 2023, but due to bureaucratic problems, the supply of the system was suspended.

Flashback

NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed jointly by Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and American Raytheon. NASAMS is designed to defend against airborne threats including aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.

The complex uses AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, known for their high accuracy and range to hit targets. NASAMS is equipped with an advanced radar system and can integrate with other air defence systems to provide multi-layered defence. The system is notable for its flexible deployment and ability to operate both autonomously and as part of larger defence systems.

By the way, the AFU has been actively using NASAMS SAMs since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
