The Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands will receive additional funding for several types of weapons under the new Defence Memorandum 2024.

Here's What We Know

"The Netherlands may also become involved in an armed conflict. We must therefore strengthen our armed forces more quickly. By being well prepared, we will discourage the enemy. We can fight, if necessary, and defend the territory of the Netherlands and our allies," the Ministry of Defence said.

"The Defence Memorandum 2024 explains four scenarios that the Netherlands could face: an attack on NATO, shadow attacks using military and non-military means, a war between China and the US, and other conflicts within Europe.

Therefore, the Dutch government has decided to allocate an additional €2.4 billion for new Leopard 2A8 tanks (with an option to purchase 6 more), 6 F-35A fighters, and 2 additional anti-submarine frigates. In addition, the army will receive 6 more NH90 NFH helicopters.

The funds will also be spent on personnel - to improve recruitment and retention - and on the defence industry.
