During the "It's Glowtime" event, Apple introduced new variants of its AirPods Max headphones. Instead of the expected new generation, the company released an updated version with several significant changes.

Here's What We Know

New colours for AirPods Max

The original AirPods Max, introduced in 2020, gained popularity as a premium version of Apple's over-ear headphones. Now they are available in five new colours:

  • Starlight
  • Midnight
  • Purple
  • Orange
  • Blue

USB-C port for charging

The updated AirPods Max now support USB-C charging as part of Apple's move to a single charging standard for all products. Previously, AirPods Max used the Lightning port for charging, and now this move brings all Apple devices closer to using USB-C.

According to Apple, AirPods Max will support personalised spatial sound in iOS 18. However, it is not yet known whether the updated model will be equipped with a new H2 chip or other features that were only available for AirPods Pro.

Prices

The updated AirPods Max are already available for pre-order and will hit the shelves on 20 September. The price remains unchanged at $549.

User comments indicate some disappointment at the lack of significant updates, such as a new H2 chip or additional audio features. However, for those who appreciate the new colours and USB-C, these headphones could be an attractive choice.
