According to the data revealed in the iOS 18 code, the new iPhone 16 Pro models will support the JPEG-XL image format. Compared to the usual JPEG, JPEG-XL provides better compression, which allows you to reduce file size without losing quality.

Here's What We Know

Although Apple did not announce support for this format during the last event, rumours of its introduction were already circulating before the iPhone 16 presentation. Now it is confirmed that iPhone 16 Pro models will be able to shoot photos in JPEG-XL format, which can be an advantage for professionals who value preserving details.

Unlike HEIC, which Apple introduced several years ago and uses lossy compression, JPEG-XL supports both lossy and lossless compression. This makes the new format attractive to users who need to have images without compromising on quality.

HEIC will remain available alongside other formats including JPEG and JPEG-XL.
