The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was originally intended to be called "Tears of the Dragon"
It is well known that the official title of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was revealed only shortly before its release, and now we finally know why.
Here's What We Know
The recently published artbook The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Master Works reveals that the game was originally supposed to be called Tears of the Dragon. According to the series' producer Eiji Aonuma, this name remained unchanged until the later stages of development. However, the team was hesitant to officially announce it because it could reveal an important plot point.
Aonuma explained that revealing the fact that the Light Dragon is Zelda could have caused problems and influenced the choice of the title. He noted that Tears of the Dragon was one of the last candidates, but using the word "Dragon" in the title would have drawn too much attention to the Light Dragon. The team even considered incorporating dragon patterns into the logo, but decided against it, fearing that it would emphasise the role of the Light Dragon too much. As the time for development was running out, it was difficult to find other ideas.
Eventually, one of the employees suggested using the word "Kingdom", which led to the name Tears of the Kingdom. This name, according to the team, could gently hint at a connection to the Light Dragon, while still allowing the use of dragons in the logo. Once the name was approved, the logo also took on its final form.
