The US, UK, Latvia and Croatia have announced large aid packages worth about $1.8bn to Ukraine.

On Wednesday, 11 September, Kyiv hosted the Crimean Platform summit, the key topics of which were the issues of Ukraine's territorial integrity, reintegration of the territories occupied by Russia, return of civilian hostages and prisoners of war, and strengthening of the Ukrainian army.

US Secretary of State Antony John Blinken, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, British Foreign Secretary David Lindon Lammy arrived in Ukraine to participate in the summit, Head of the Czech Senate Miloš Vystrčil, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu and other high-ranking guests.

Here's What We Know

A separate item of the summit was the announcement of new military aid packages for Ukraine. The following support was announced during joint press conferences with President Zelenskyy (Volodymyr Zelenskyy):

THE U.S. WILL:

  • Will provide additional air defence systems and allocate $700 million in aid to prepare Ukraine's energy system for the difficult winter ahead, for humanitarian needs and demining.

UK:

  • Will provide more than £600m of aid to Ukraine. The package will include hundreds of air defence missiles, thousands of artillery ammunition, and military equipment to be delivered by the end of 2024;

Latvia:

  • Will replenish its stockpile of military equipment, particularly armoured personnel carriers and UAVs. The 2025 package includes Patriot systems and 0.25 per cent of GDP to support Ukraine.

Croatia

  • is allocating €200 million for military needs, energy restoration, treatment and rehabilitation of veterans.

President Zielenski expressed great gratitude to all allies for their support in such a difficult time for Ukraine and stressed that only joint efforts can stop the aggressor, who unleashed the largest war in Europe since the Second World War.
