Meta, Snap and TikTok have launched a new programme called Thrive aimed at preventing the distribution of graphic content depicting or encouraging suicide and self-harm.

Here's What We Know

The programme allows participating companies to share "alerts" to warn each other about infringing content on their platforms. Thrive was created in partnership with Mental Health Coalition, a charity that works to remove stigma around mental health discussions. Meta provides the technical infrastructure to securely share signals, using the same technology used in the Lantern programme to combat online child exploitation. Companies can exchange hashes corresponding to the offending media to signal each other about violations.

Meta says it has already made such content hard to access on its platform, but tries to leave room for discussions about mental health, suicide and self-harm, as long as they don't promote it or contain graphic descriptions.
