Google is testing new desktop windows for Android tablets

Google is testing a new feature for Android tablets that will allow users to freely change the size and position of applications on the screen. The "desktop windows" feature is currently available as a preview for developers. It allows you to open several application windows at the same time and manage them more conveniently.

Here's What We Know

Apps on Android tablets now open in full screen mode by default. The new feature allows you to display each application in a window with the ability to move, zoom, and close it. A taskbar will also appear at the bottom of the screen with icons of running applications.

This feature is reminiscent of Stage Manager on the iPad and Samsung's DeX experience, which allows you to manage windows on Android devices as if they were desktop computers.

After the innovation becomes available to everyone, you can activate it by pressing and holding the window bar at the top of the screen or using a keyboard shortcut. You can exit the mode by closing all windows or dragging them up.

The feature is currently available in the latest Android 15 QPR1 beta release for Pixel tablets. The release time of the full version and support for new models such as the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold have not yet been announced.
