Tesla has created a new automatic levelling function for wireless charging of electric vehicles. According to the company's latest patent, future Home Wireless Charging Pad charging stations will allow cars to find and accurately stand on the charging pad.

Here's What We Know

Charging an electric car wirelessly can be difficult, as you need to precisely align the car over the charging pad to avoid energy loss and heat. Tesla's new system solves this problem by automatically helping the car to get into position correctly, which reduces energy loss and simplifies the charging process.

The charging pad will adapt to different positions of the charging cell in the car, allowing for an optimised charging experience no matter how the car is parked. The car's backup cameras will be able to locate the wireless charging pad and then automatically park the car in the best place to start the charging session.

Tesla's technology uses resonant inductive charging, which allows energy to be transferred wirelessly over short distances using magnetic fields. This is already used in electronics such as smartphones, and now Tesla plans to adapt it for electric vehicles.

The patent also suggests that the charging pad will be able to automatically adjust to different cell positions to improve charging efficiency. It is not yet known whether this feature will work in conjunction with autopilot or autonomous driving, but it is likely that it will appear in new Tesla models, such as the possible Robotaxi.

Tesla hasn't provided any further details, so we'll have to wait for an official announcement for more information.
