Media: AMD beats Intel in bid to supply chips for next-generation PlayStation 6 console
Immediately after the introduction of the PS5 Pro, discussions have resumed online about a full-fledged new next-generation console from Sony, which is undoubtedly in development.
The Reuters publication reported interesting information about the supplier of components for a potential PS6.
Here's What We Know
Immediately three Reuters sources reported that Sony held a billion-dollar tender in 2022, the winner of which will supply chips for the PlayStation 6.
At the last stage competed two corporations: Intel and AMD, on the basis of whose components are created PS5 and, respectively.PS5 Pro. It is reported that Sony and Intel did not agree on the amount of contact and the Japanese again favoured AMD.
Reuters journalists noted that for Intel the loss of a multi-billion dollar contract was a tangible blow, as it was a great opportunity for it to get a stable profit, which, however, is not as high as in the production of chips for AI.
Sony and AMD have a long business relationship and their continuation was probably great news not only for the chip maker, but also for Japanese engineers, who will be easier to build the architecture of PS6, knowing the specifics of working with components from AMD.
Intel spokesperson reacted to the Reuters publication as follows:
We do not intend to comment on any current or potential conversations with partners. We have a steady stream of customers for both our products and manufacturing operations and we are focused on innovating to meet their needs.
