Google is considering changing notification icons in Android 15. As part of the experiment, the company is testing the use of basic app icons instead of their customised versions to display notifications in the status bar, AOD screen and notification bar.

Here's What We Know

Flags were found in Android 15 code uploaded to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that indicate this change. One of the flags replaces app-provided icons with their main icons, and the other replaces themed icons with monochrome versions if themed icons are available.

These changes could improve the visual experience of notifications, making them more recognisable, but could also cause contrast issues, especially on AOD. It's still unclear whether Google will implement these changes in the final version of Android 15, but experimentation is ongoing to improve the notification system on the platform.
