Snapchat introduces new AR glasses Spectacles 5, which are available only for developers
Snapchat has unveiled new Spectacles 5 augmented reality glasses that offer significant improvements over the previous generation.
Here's What We Know
The main novelty is a significant increase in the angle of view to 46° diagonally, compared to 26.3° in the fourth generation. The glasses also have a better resolution with 37 pixels per degree, which is 25% more than previous models.
Spectacles 5 weighs 226 g, which is twice as much as its 134 g predecessor. The battery life has increased from 30 to 45 minutes.
The new glasses use two sets of Qualcomm chips to distribute the load, which reduces power consumption, and titanium vapour chambers provide cooling. Snap OS and Snap Spatial Engine promise a latency of 13 milliseconds, which provides a near-instant response when displaying virtual 3D elements.
These glasses are available only to developers through a programme with a monthly fee of $99. Consumers cannot purchase them at this time. This product is available mainly for testing and developing new AR applications.
In partnership with Lego, ILM Immersive, Niantic, and Wabisabi Games, Snapchat is preparing unique AR experiences such as virtual Lego sets and games. However, most users are unlikely to have the opportunity to enjoy these innovations in the near future.
