Media: Australia may transfer 59 decommissioned M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine
Ukraine desperately needs military equipment to repel Russian aggression.
Most of the world's democracies are giving Ukraine their aid, but it is critically lacking as the country fights a vastly superior enemy force.
The Australian government is about to write off 59 M1A1 Abrams tanks and is in talks with the US to transfer them to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is working on a plan to transfer the tanks to Ukraine, instead of disposing of them, as was the case with Taipan helicopters. We shall remind you that in the winter of 2024, despite Kyiv's requests, the Australians destroyed 47 helicopters, which angered the public, the Ukrainian diaspora and some politicians.
In July, Australia withdrew 59 US M1A1 Abrams tanks from service as they will be replaced with modern vehicles. These tanks entered service in 2004 and, of course, have never been in combat conditions and have a significant stock of components.
Ukraine has sent an official request to Australia for the transfer of the combat vehicles, but since the tanks are American-made, the country must receive approval from the United States under export regulations.
