Estonia opens a military base for allied troops near the border with Russia

The Estonian Defence Investment Centre (RKIK) has opened a military base near the Russian border to expand accommodation for allies stationed in the region.

The new Reedo centre is located in southeastern Estonia and will be operated by the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Defence Forces.

The base has eight main halls that can accommodate approximately 1,000 personnel. There are also equipment maintenance stations, storage facilities, kitchen and dining facilities, and laundry facilities.

According to the military investment agency, the construction of Camp Reedo and related works cost approximately €21 million.

"We have deployed allied units in the village of Taara, where we have provided them with barracks and also built one of the largest container settlements in Estonia," said RKIK South manager Peeter Karja.

The base is ideal for hosting allies and deploying units, for example, in a crisis situation or during exercises.

"In order to better defend Estonia, we must be prepared to host allies on a much larger scale. However, the Defence Forces already need additional space to be able to host additional allied units if necessary and to provide appropriate conditions for deployment, storage of equipment, weapons and ammunition, as well as training," said Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur.
