In just two days, six Russian aircraft without transponders were spotted over the Baltic Sea
The Latvian Air Force said it had spotted as many as six Russian aircraft with their transponders switched off over the Baltic Sea between 20 and 21 September.
Here's What We Know
As noted, the planes did not have a flight plan, but simply violated the country's airspace. German Eurofighter Typhoon fighters are based in Latvia as part of the Baltic Air Policing mission, so it was they who were called upon to intercept the violators.
By the way, Eurofighter Typhoons of the Italian and German air forces are deployed in the Baltic region. The Italians are in Lithuania at an airbase near the town of Siauliai, and the Germans are in Latvia near the town of Lielvarde.
It is worth noting that Russia occasionally violates the airspace of the Baltic States, usually with aircraft. However, recently, on 7 September, a Shahed kamikaze drone flew into Latvia. The country's air force reported that this drone in Latvia cannot be seen as an open military escalation against the country, and its target was not Latvia.
