A team of 21 soldiers from the 101st Division has formed a new type of unit - a Lethal Unmanned Systems (LUS) platoon.

Here's What We Know

Defence One explained that this unit is now part of the Second Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. It was created as part of the Transformation in Contact initiative.

The programme was launched in early 2024 and provides new equipment to the 101st Division, the Third Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division and the Second Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division.

The soldiers will soon provide feedback on the new doctrine in conditions as close as possible to real combat operations.

The main task of drone operators is to detect enemy forces and, if possible, adjust fire. However, they also cannot directly transmit video to other soldiers. Instead, they have a fire control officer attached to them who communicates by radio with the mortar squad to adjust the fire.

The new platoon became part of a multi-purpose company formed in April 2024. This company consists of four platoons: reconnaissance, mortar, anti-tank and LUS platoons. It replaced the heavy weapons company, which was reorganised into a platoon in February 2024.

The LUS has 21 soldiers, nine of whom directly operate drones, while the rest are engaged in air and drone defence. In addition, the operators have the ability to attack the enemy on their own: some of the UAVs are equipped to drop munitions, and training is also provided in the use of Switchblade kamikaze drones.

The platoon is also equipped with small, short-range UAVs, including Parrot, Skydio and Vesper, with a flight time of less than an hour.
