75% of games sold in the UK in August were sold digitally, up 10% year-on-year
Digital copies of games are becoming increasingly popular. It is easier for players to buy a game from a digital store than to wait for a disc. This has led to 75% of games in the UK being sold digitally in August.
Here's What We Know
A total of 1.74 million video games were sold in the UK during August, down 1.5% from 2023. However, 75% of games sold in the UK last month by major publishers were in digital format, up 10% from August 2023.
In terms of consoles, just under 75,000 game consoles were sold in the UK in August, down 3% from the previous month and 45% from 2023.
PS5 sales in August were 4% higher than in July, but they were down 57% year-on-year.
Switch sales in August were down 10% compared to July and 30% compared to the same period in 2023.
As for Xbox, sales in August were almost the same as in July, but 22% lower than in August last year. Microsoft's console was slightly ahead of Switch in August.
In addition, 516,774 gamepads and other accessories were sold in the UK, which is 4.5% less than in July and 9.6% less than in August last year.
