On 19 September, the first episode of the Penguin series in Matt Reeves' Batman universe premiered on HBO Max. And the audience liked the debut episode so much that its ratings are higher than the Batman film.

Here's What We Know

At the time of writing, The Penguin series has 89% freshness from viewers and 94% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Batman (2022), on the other hand, received 87% freshness from viewers and 85% from critics.

We would like to remind you that critics primarily praise Colin Farrell's excellent performance as the Penguin. The actor has already played the villain in Batman (2022).

One critic wrote that the series eschews all the usual comic book trappings, instead emulating the gritty, violent aesthetic of such revered gangster classics as The Sopranos and Scarface.

It is also noted that through a series of stunning moments, Penguin presents a version of the character that Batman fans have never seen before.

It is interesting whether this assessment will remain after the premiere of all 8 episodes, but so far, Matt Reeves and his team have really managed to create an interesting and exciting saga about the Dark Knight.
