WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to block messages from unknown accounts. The feature is already available for beta testers on Android. It is hidden in the Advanced section of the privacy settings and is presented as a simple toggle. Users will be able to switch it on and off at any time.

However, WhatsApp will only block messages if they exceed a certain number. This is so that business accounts and other important contacts can continue to send messages that may be important. The blocking will be lifted once the volume of messages returns to normal. The feature is still being tested and its final version may vary.

The beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.24.20.16 with the feature is available to a limited number of users, but WhatsApp plans to expand access to it in the coming weeks. Those interested can sign up for the beta testing programme via Google Play.
