New information about AMD's upcoming portable chip, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme, has surfaced online. According to sources, this chip will be equipped with an 8-core processor that combines the new Zen 5 and Zen 5c architectures.

Here's What We Know

Unlike its predecessor, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, which used only Zen 4 cores, the new product will include three Zen 5 cores and five Zen 5c cores. An informant under the nickname @Olrak29_ found a list on the web confirming these specifications, codenamed Z2X28W 64-bit Microprocessor.

This chip is supposed to be the basis for AMD's new Strix Point-based pocket consoles. It is also reported that AMD can tune frequencies and TDP to optimise performance for portable devices. With the new Zen 5 cores and RDNA 3.5 GPU, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme should provide a competitive advantage over Intel's Lunar Lake series products.

The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is expected to hit the market in early 2025.

Last time, Asus was the first company to introduce the Ryzen Z Extreme chip in the ROG Ally portable console. This time, AMD probably won't release the basic version of the chip, as the previous model was only presented on one console.
