According to recent reports, Apple is planning to introduce a sub-panel camera (UPC) technology for Face ID in its future devices. Possibly in its first foldable iPhone. The technology was previously expected to appear in the iPhone 17 series, but it is now reported that Apple has delayed its use.

Here's What We Know

Korean publication The Elec claims that the company is waiting for its two main display suppliers, Samsung and LG, to adopt the technology. Currently, neither company has reached a level that meets Apple's requirements for visibility of sensors under the panel. Samsung is working with Canadian company OTI Lumionics to address these challenges, while LG is developing its own technology.

It is expected that a foldable iPhone with a design similar to the Galaxy Flip could arrive in 2026, where Apple will already be able to utilise the new technology. However, the company is yet to decide which device will be the first to get UPC technology for Face ID.
