Turkey has developed a hypersonic modification of the Tayfun ballistic missile that reaches speeds of Mach 5.5
Turkey's leading defence company Roketsan has begun development and testing of a hypersonic missile based on its own Tayfun short-range ballistic missile.
Here's What We Know
During the tests, the hypersonic version of Tayfun developed a speed of up to Mach 5.5, which makes it virtually invulnerable to modern missile defence systems.
This development will significantly increase the range and accuracy of hitting targets, which will significantly strengthen Turkey's combat power. Thus, if earlier Tayfun ballistic missiles covered a distance of 300 to 1,000 kilometres, now this figure will be much greater.
Of course, the exact characteristics of the new Tayfun missile have not been disclosed, but the creation of such a weapon would allow Turkey to join the ranks of the few states that have hypersonic missiles in service and strengthen its position of leadership in the Middle East.
