In another Nintendo triumph, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom won the Japan Game Awards 2024 as the best game of the year

Traditionally, the Tokyo Game Show presents awards to the best Japanese games that were released in the previous fiscal year.

2024 was no exception and today the winners of the annual Japan Game Awards were announced.

Here's What We Know

The winners were chosen among games that were released between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024. And the triumphant winner will probably surprise few people: it was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, one of the most highly rated games on Metacritic. It won the main prize, as well as awards for special successes and best sales (remember that Tears of the Kingdom sold over 20 million copies in its first year).

The popular fighting game Street Fighter 6 received the Special Award, which recognises the developers' achievements in the field of accessibility settings related to sound, thanks to which even visually impaired people can perfectly navigate the game.

The list of the most deserving releases according to the Japan Game Awards included the following titles:

  • Dragon's Dogma 2 (Capcom)
  • Final Fantasy XVI (Square Enix)
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Square Enix)
  • Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (Sega)
  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (Sega)
  • Persona 3 Reload (Atlus)
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Nintendo)
  • Street Fighter 6 (Capcom)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo)
  • Unicorn Overlord (Atlus).
