According to a new report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple no longer plans to invest in OpenAI. This happened on the eve of the completion of OpenAI's $6.5 billion funding round, where Microsoft and Nvidia remain potential investors.

Here's What We Know

Apple stopped negotiations on participation in this funding, which came as a surprise to many. It is noteworthy that Apple's investments in other large Silicon Valley companies have always been rare. For the first time, Apple's possible participation in OpenAI became known last month, but the specific amount of investment remained unknown.

Microsoft is already a significant investor in OpenAI and owns a 49% share of the company's profits. The latest report mentions that Microsoft plans to increase its investment in OpenAI by another $1 billion in this round.

Apple's refusal to invest coincides with new leadership and structural changes in the company. In particular, former Apple design chief Jony Ive confirmed that he is working with OpenAI to develop an artificial intelligence hardware product.

Despite the investment withdrawal, Apple and OpenAI plan to work together to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18 later this year. Thanks to this partnership, ChatGPT will be able to process requests together with Siri.

Bloomberg notes that both companies do not make financial payments to each other as part of this partnership. Apple believes that the OpenAI integration is of "equal or greater value" than cash.
