Next instalment of Pillars of Eternity could be a tactical game: Obsidian Entertainment is considering a dramatic genre change
In February 2025, Obsidian Entertainment studio will release Avowed. The events of the new action-RPG will unfold in the universe of Pillars of Eternity, which counts two classic isometric role-playing games. The developers admitted that with this decision they want to attract a new audience to their franchise. But, as it turns out, the experiments do not end there.
Here's What We Know
The creator of Pillars of Eternity and one of the lead developers of Avowed, Josh Sawyer, gave an interview on the YouTube channel Limit Break Network. He said that his team is seriously considering the suggestion of some employees to make the next project a tactical game. They believe that this genre would be a great fit for Pillars of Eternity development, and many Obsidian developers are fans of tactical games and are very good at them.
In fact, several people at the studio have floated the idea of a tactical Pillars. Personally, I'm very interested in these types of games. They have a really interesting place in the market, for they tend to have a small but extremely loyal audience.
Sawyer emphasised that this is still talk and not the fact that such an idea will get a full-fledged implementation, and further work will depend on how the audience will accept Avowed.
Recall that Pillars of Eternity 2 turned out to be a commercially unsuccessful project and prompted Obsidian to experiment, the result of which was an unusual adventure game Pentiment, which turned out to be a niche game, but earned excellent ratings.
Avowed will be released on the 18th of February on PC (Steam) and Xbox Series. The game will be available on Game Pass on the day of release.
