"Baklava" will be the next dessert in Android's range of code names

Google continues to use dessert codenames for new versions of Android, even though they are no longer publicly mentioned. Android 16, which will be released next year, will be called Baklava.

Here's What We Know

This was revealed thanks to a change in the AOSP code, where the minimum platform SDK version for Android 16 is listed as "Baklava", which breaks the usual alphabetical order. Earlier versions of Android had code names starting with the next letter of the alphabet, for example, Android 15 is called "Vanilla Ice Cream". However, starting with Android 16, Google decided to change its naming approach due to changes in the development process of the platform.

Changes in the Android development process affected the choice of code names. With the move to a trunk stable project, Google changed the naming scheme for builds. For example, Android 14 QPR2 builds started with the letter "A" instead of "U" as before. Next year, builds will start with "B", which explains the choice of "Baklava" for Android 16.

So Google is continuing the tradition of dessert names, but with some changes in the development process.
