Norway is considering building a fence on its 200-kilometre border with Russia to increase security and address potential illegal migration.

Here's What We Know

Norwegian Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mel said that they decided to take this step after Finland. Since April 2023, this country has been building a 200-kilometre fence along critical sections of its eastern border to restrict unauthorised migration. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

"The border fence is very interesting not only because it can act as a deterrent, but also because it contains sensors and technology that can detect if people are moving close to the border," Mel said.

The details of the plan are not yet clear, such as whether the entire border will be fenced or just parts of it.

According to the minister, the construction of barriers is an expensive investment, so it needs to be assessed first. However, she suggested the idea of purchasing drones and increasing the number of border guards in Sturskug to patrol the area.
