The United States delivered the first batch of the Harpoon anti-ship missile system to Taiwan.

Here's What We Know

This is part of a $2.22 billion deal in 2020 for the United States to supply Taiwan with up to 100 Harpoon coastal defence systems and related equipment.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defence has also allocated an additional $469 million for the construction of related facilities.

The package includes 411 containers, 100 Harpoon Coastal Defence System vehicles, spare and repair parts, as well as logistical support such as training and training equipment, and technical assistance from the US government and contractors.

The first phase of delivery is expected to be completed by 2026 and will be integrated into Taiwan's new Coastal Combat Command, which is scheduled to be established in the same year.

The second and final phase is expected to be completed by 2028.

Taipei plans to use the US Harpoon missile system along with its own Hsiung Feng missiles to bolster its maritime defence capabilities amid the threat of a potential Chinese invasion.
