YouTube has announced significant updates to its Shorts video service. From 15 October, content creators will be able to upload videos up to three minutes long. This feature was demanded by users, especially against the backdrop of competition from TikTok, which allows uploading videos of up to 10 minutes.

YouTube is also introducing a templates feature that will allow creators to reuse formats from other Shorts. This will make it easier to create trending content, but could lead to monotonous videos. The new feature will be available through a "remix" button on the video.

YouTube is actively promoting Shorts as an alternative to TikTok, adding similar features and incentivising video creators financially. However, the company also realises that some users prefer longer videos and is introducing a "show fewer Shorts" option to temporarily reduce the number of short videos in a user's feed.
