Waymo and Hyundai have announced a multi-year strategic partnership that will see the Waymo Driver autonomous driving system integrated into the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric car.

Here's What We Know

The move was in response to the changed political situation and possible bans on Chinese cars in the US. The Ioniq 5, manufactured in America, will replace the Chinese Zeekr in Waymo's fleet. Testing will begin in late 2025, with commercial use planned for the following years. The companies intend to produce a significant number of autonomous electric vehicles with modifications such as backup equipment and automatic doors.

Hyundai Motor North America CEO José Muñoz said Waymo's technology improves road safety and the Ioniq 5 is ideal for scaling that technology. This is just the first step in the partnership, and the companies are actively exploring additional opportunities for collaboration.
