Halo developers abandon their own Slipspace game engine in favour of Unreal Engine in future titles
For almost two years, there have been rumours that 343 Industries would switch from its own Slipspace Engine to Unreal Engine 5 - now it's official: all future Halo games will be released on the Epic Games engine.
Here's What We Know
COO Elizabeth van Wyck explained that Slipspace no longer supports their future game development needs. The move allows them to focus more on creating games and less on creating tools, and makes it easier to deliver updates and new content to players.
Art director Chris Matthews highlighted the obsolescence of Slipspace and praised Unreal's advanced features such as Nanite and Lumen, which allow for richer and more immersive game worlds.
This change builds on two years of development by Project Foundry, a technical demo using Unreal Engine 5 that has already laid the groundwork for future Halo projects.
