"Kaspersky Lab" lost access to Google Play due to US restrictions

Google has removed Kaspersky Lab's antivirus software from Google Play and closed the company's developer account. This happened a few days before the deadline for US-imposed restrictions on 29 September.

Here's What We Know

In a blog post, Kaspersky Lab called the decision an "over-interpretation" of the restrictions, arguing that they do not prohibit the sale and distribution of the company's products outside the US. Apps previously installed from Google Play will continue to work, but will not receive updates and cannot be reinstalled.

Users started noticing the app's absence from Google Play on 27 September, and company officials confirmed it 2 days later. Google confirmed the removal, citing restrictions imposed by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security.

Sanctions against Kaspersky Lab were imposed in June, and in response, the company ceased operations in the US, replacing its software with alternative antivirus software from UltraAV without warning.
