In October 2024, Google introduced a new audio app called Recorder, which will be available on all Chromebooks with the ChromeOS 130 update. Some AI features will be exclusive to Chromebook Plus models. However, basic features such as audio recording and speech-to-text will be available to all Chromebook users, regardless of the model.

Here's What We Know

Audio recording and speech-to-text will work without a real-time internet connection. To do this, you will need to download a model of approximately 100 MB.

The app has a user-friendly interface similar to Pixel Recorder, fully adapted to the Material You style. Users will be able to record audio from the device, as well as search through transcripts and adjust the playback speed. The app allows users to export audio and text.

For Chromebook Plus owners, an additional feature is available - an AI recording summary based on transcription. It generates a three-digit summary and suggests a title for the recording.

The ChromeOS 130 update will also add new features for video calls, such as a studio-grade microphone and appearance effects. The update will start rolling out at the end of October.
