The US has agreed to provide Poland with a $3 billion loan to purchase US helicopters under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme.

Here's What We Know

This is the third FMF loan to Poland in a year, totalling more than $7 billion. The latest loan will be used to purchase AH-64 Apache attack helicopters from the US manufacturer Boeing.

In August this year, Poland signed a $10 billion deal to buy 96 Apaches. Delivery is scheduled between 2028 and 2032. Previous loans of $2 billion were approved in September 2023 and July 2024.

It is worth explaining that the FMF mechanism was created to finance military equipment for Washington's most important partners.

After the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Warsaw ordered tens of billions of dollars worth of defence platforms, including US F-35s, Patriot air defence systems and Abrams main battle tanks.

By the way, in fiscal year 2023, the United States recorded $80.9 billion in foreign military sales (FMS), up 55.9 per cent year-on-year.
