The Snapdragon 8 Elite will show significant performance gains, but also raises concerns over overheating
According to earlier leaks and rumours, Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip from Qualcomm will show a decent power boost, compared to its predecessor. In recent tests, the chip has shown impressive results in performance tests, but has faced overheating issues and high power consumption.
Here's What We Know
It is reported that there could be two versions of the chip, one with a maximum operating frequency of 4.09GHz and another overclocked to 4.32GHz. In Geekbench, the overclocked version of the chip scored 3,216 points in single-core and 10,051 points in multi-core tests. This score is 35 per cent better in single-core performance and 30 per cent better in multi-core performance compared to previous generations. The Adreno 830 GPU also performed well, supporting 4K resolution at 144Hz.
However, the overclocked version of the chip consumes more than 20W of power, resulting in heat up to 98.5°C. This raises concerns about thermal management and battery life of devices. Manufacturers like OnePlus and Xiaomi plan to use larger batteries and active cooling to address these concerns. Until Qualcomm addresses the overheating issues, the Snapdragon 8 Elite may struggle in real-world use, especially with resource-intensive tasks.
The chip is expected to be officially unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit from 21 to 24 October.
