Boeing cuts 17,000 jobs amid strikes and financial difficulties
Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg announced a 10 per cent reduction in the company's total workforce, which amounts to about 17,000 jobs, including executives and managers.
Here's What We Know
The decision comes amid a machinists' strike that has halted production at most Boeing plants, including those producing the 737 Max. The strike, which began in mid-September, has affected about 33,000 unionised machinists and has had a significant impact on the company's financial position.
In addition, Boeing is delaying the development of the 777X aircraft until 2026 due to ongoing problems and work stoppages. In early 2024, the company was forced to suspend operations of some 737 Max 9 aircraft after a door plug on one Alaska Airlines plane broke off during flight.
Boeing pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to defraud the US government after two crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. The company also suffered significant losses due to the delayed return of the Starliner from the International Space Station.
